Rooty - The Racoon is a game produced in 48 hours for global game jam 2023 under the University of Westminster.

This game was produced by five members, including myself, under the theme of "Roots".

We implemented this theme by approaching it as a "Nature" game and returning to your roots ( where everything started from the beginning).
Our game is based on Rooty, the racoon, who found himself alone and desperately ran to the forest's darkest spot.

The game's main objective is to help him rebuild his roots in the forest and remember the good moments he had with his family before moving to the big city.

Collect resources and materials ( roots, stones and wood ) to build Rooty's new home. However, be aware that at night, some wolves will show up to prevent you from finding the resources.
Collectables

As I mentioned, in the world, there are some resources that the player can collect by just walking over them.

Berries - These allow the player to regain food and health once its starts to deprecate due to the lack of food or water.

Water - Has a similar mechanic to the berries. However, the player can drink by walking into the rivers on the map.

Roots / Rocks / Wood - These are resources the player can collect. However, these are used to build the tiny home for Rooty.

The player can see all their needs visually in their UI.

Environment

The environment was planned and designed for a simple and functional level. It allows the player to navigate in different directions and explore small areas with a great view.
"3D Forest Landscape Trees in Fog" by KotSysanin ( on Turbosquid ) inspired the game-level design.
It was developed using unreal tools and adding the assets ( grass, trees & stones ) as foliage. The rivers were created with a plugin developed by Unreal to provide a lovely flowing river.

Day & Night was created by adjusting the world settings and using a simple blueprint on the scene, which rotates the Light source and the sky sphere. It also allowed the members to add a mechanic to the enemies, spawning only during the night.
Game Menus

The game menus were also developed by creating widgets and using blueprints to program each button's functionality. Each Widget is attached to a specific scene, allowing the player to quickly reach and see the information.
